Handmade jewelry can be delicate, so here are some tips to keep your jewelry sparkling like new!

GENERAL TIPS

  1. When dressing, always put jewelry on last - after you’ve applied makeup, lotion, perfume and hairspray.  When removing your jewelry, wipe it down with a very soft cloth.  Do not use tissues or paper towels because paper products have wood fibers in them that can create tiny scratches.

  2. Try to protect jewelry from scratches, sharp blows, harsh chemicals, extreme temperatures and sunlight.

  3. Store jewelry separately to prevent scratching.

  4. Do not submerge jewelry in water - especially in a pool or hot tub ... chlorine is damaging.

  5. To help keep sterling silver from tarnishing, keep your jewelry in an airtight plastic bag. Do not store natural pearls in plastic bags.

  6. If a necklace or bracelet gets tangled, unclasp the piece and lay it on a flat surface.  Use two toothpicks to gently release the knot.

  7. Always store silk-threaded necklaces flat, as silk stretches over time.

  8. Liquid jewelry cleansing solution is not safe for handmade jewelry.

  9. As a last resort, you may very gently wash your jewelry in a mild soap and water solution.  Don’t leave your jewelry in the solution for more than a minute and make sure to let the jewelry lay flat and completely air dry before storing.

SWAROVSKI TIPS

  1. To ensure the lasting beauty of your Swarovski jewelry, Swarovski recommends that you occasionally polish each piece with a soft cloth.  This will also remove fingerprints.

  2. Do not wipe crystal jewelry with a polishing cloth intended for sterling silver or gold; such a cloth will leave a dulling film on the crystals.

  3. Never use a toothbrush to clean crystal jewelry.  That will easily scratch the delicate coating.

  4. To prevent shattering or chipping, be gentle and make sure you don’t scratch or bang your jewelry against hard surfaces.

  5. Swarovski pearls should be buffed with a soft dry cloth and not immersed in water.

NATURAL PEARL TIPS

  1. The best way to keep your pearls beautiful is by wearing them.  Your body’s natural oils can keep pearls moist and lustrous.

  2. Wipe your pearls with a soft cloth as soon as you take them off.

  3. Dirty pearls can be cleaned with a mild soap and water solution.  Never clean your pearls with solutions that contain ammonia or harsh detergents.
